Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Ji, fondly known as BhaiJi, was a towering figure in the spiritual and literary renaissance of modern India. स्नेहपूर्वक “भाइजी” के नाम से प्रसिद्ध, श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी, आधुनिक भारत के आध्यात्मिक और साहित्यिक पुनर्जागरण के महानायक थे। गोरखपुर स्थित ‘गीता प्रेस’ के सह-संस्थापक के रूप में प्रसिद्ध भाइजी ने अपना सम्पूर्ण जीवन भारतीय शास्त्रों की सनातन शिक्षाओं के प्रचार-प्रसार और जनमानस में आध्यात्मिक चेतना जगाने के लिए समर्पित कर दिया। उनके द्वारा धर्म और साहित्य के क्षेत्र में जो अमूल्य योगदान हुआ है, उसे देखकर तो यही लगता है कि इसके पीछे ईश्वर की ही कोई सुनियोजित योजना थी, क्योंकि जब-जब पृथ्वी पर धर्म की हानि हुई है, उसका ह्रास हुआ है, तब-तब किसी न किसी संत का शुभागमन हुआ है।
A Life Rooted in Spirituality
Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Ji’s life was like a tree deeply rooted in spirituality. Born into a spiritual family on 17th September 1892, the life of Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar was a living testament to the amazing power of faith and devotion. He was born to Shri Bhimraj and Shrimati Rikhibai in Shillong. Those were the days when Shillong used to be the capital of Assam. When a devastating earthquake struck Shillong in 1897, many of his family members died, but due to god’s he survived almost miraculously. His life was saved as he had gone outside to receive Prasad. At that time, he was only five years old.
आध्यात्मिकता में रमा जीवन
श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी का जीवन एक ऐसे वृक्ष के समान था, जिसकी जड़ें गहराई तक आध्यात्मिकता में थीं । 17 सितंबर 1892 को एक आध्यात्मिक परिवार में जन्मे श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी का जीवन श्रद्धा और भक्ति की अद्भुत शक्ति का प्रमाण था। उनका जन्म असम की राजधानी शिलॉन्ग में श्री भीमराज और श्रीमती रिखीबाई के घर हुआ। ये वो समय था जब शिलॉन्ग असम की राजधानी हुआ करता था। 1897 में जब एक विनाशकारी भूकंप ने शिलॉन्ग में कहर बरपाया तब उनके परिवार के कई सदस्य दिवंगत हो गए, लेकिन ईश्वरीय कृपा से वे चमत्कारिक रूप से बच गए। उनका जीवन इस कारण बच गया क्योंकि वह प्रसाद लेने के लिए बाहर गए हुए थे। उस समय उनकी आयु केवल पाँच वर्ष थी।
Soon, he was shifted to Ratangarh in Rajasthan where he exhibited a strong inclination towards spirituality. He used to immerse himself in studying sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, and Upanishads. He was also enrolled in a school to learn Mathematics, Hindi and Mahajani. For Sanskrit learning, his grandmother Ramkaur Devi sent him to Shri Vasannathji, a religious head of the Nath sect, and it became his primary language of interest. Thus, when he was just eight, he was already doing daily recitations of Hanuman Chalisa, Hanumat Kavacham, and Durga Shaptashati.

Despite his involvement in business early on under the able guidance of his father Shri Bhimraj Ji, his heart was always drawn toward the service of humanity and the propagation of dharma. During his brief stay in Bombay, he developed a keen interest in translating religious books of Gujarati and Marathi into Hindi. Inspired by luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Poddar Ji envisioned a society uplifted by the light of spiritual wisdom and harmonious living. His heart was all love; his mind a vast storehouse of knowledge. Be it day or night, he was ever helpful to all.
यद्यपि प्रारंभ में वे अपने पिताश्री भीमराज जी के कुशल मार्गदर्शन में व्यापार में सक्रिय रहे, फिर भी उनका हृदय सदा मानवता की सेवा और धर्म के प्रचार-प्रसार की ओर आकर्षित रहता था। बंबई में अपने संक्षिप्त प्रवास के दौरान, उन्होंने गुजराती और मराठी के धार्मिक ग्रंथों को हिंदी में अनुवाद करने में गहरी रुचि विकसित की। महात्मा गांधी और स्वामी विवेकानंद जैसे महान व्यक्तित्वों से प्रेरित होकर, पोद्दार जी ने एक ऐसे समाज की कल्पना की जो आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान के प्रकाश और सामंजस्यपूर्ण जीवन से उन्नत हो। उनका हृदय प्रेम से परिपूर्ण था; उनका मस्तिष्क एक विशाल ज्ञान का भंडार था। दिन हो या रात, वे सदा सबकी सहायता करने को तत्पर रहते थे।
Founding of Gita Press
In 1923, Shri Jaya Dayal Goenka founded Geeta Press in Gorakhpur. His sole aim was to promote Sanatan Dharma among the masses, irrespective of their economic status. In the same year, Hanuman Prasad Poddar was searching for an isolated place to practice spirituality. So, within no time, he left Calcutta (now Kolkata) to take charge of the Geeta Press. This marked the beginning of a new era. An era of dissemination of Hindu philosophy and culture due to his tireless efforts and the Gita Press successfully numerous books, including the Shreemad Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and the Puranas. These scriptures, meticulously translated and published at affordable prices, became staples in Indian households, inspiring millions to lead virtuous lives.
गीता प्रेस की स्थापना
1923 में श्री जयदयाल गोयन्दका ने गोरखपुर में गीता प्रेस की स्थापना की। उनका एकमात्र उद्देश्य यह था कि वे समाज में, चाहे कोई गरीब हो या अमीर, सभी में सनातन धर्म का प्रचार करें। उसी वर्ष, हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी एकांत स्थान की खोज में थे जहाँ वे आध्यात्मिक जीवन जीने की साधना कर सकें। इसलिए जल्द ही, उन्होंने कलकत्ता (अब कोलकाता) को छोड़कर गीता प्रेस का प्रभार संभाल लिया। इस प्रकार, एक नए युग की शुरुआत हुई। यह युग हिंदू दर्शन और संस्कृति के प्रसार का था, जो उनके निरंतर प्रयासों के कारण संभव हुआ। गीता प्रेस ने श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, उपनिषदों और पुराणों सहित कई पुस्तकें सफलतापूर्वक प्रकाशित कीं। इन पवित्र ग्रंथों का सूक्ष्म अनुवाद कर उन्हें सस्ती कीमतों पर प्रकाशित किया गया, जिससे वे भारतीय घरों में एक अभिन्न अंग बन गए और लाखों लोगों को पुण्यपूर्ण जीवन जीने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
The Editorial Genius of Kalyan
As an editor of Kalyan, started in 1927, Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Ji successfully makes the monthly magazine a lighthouse of spiritual and moral guidance. Under his editorship, Kalyan became synonymous with truth, devotion, and enlightenment. He used to make sure that each of its editions had articles on the lives of saints, practical application of spiritual principles, and reflections on philosophies that remained relevant across different eras. His writings and speeches frequently talk about the importance of cultivating moral values. Very soon, BhaiJi began receiving thousands of letters each month from the readers of Kalyan. Initially, he personally penned responses to each letter with his own hands. However, as the volume of correspondence grew overwhelming, he turned to the assistance of a typewriter to address them. Among those who wrote to him were his devoted followers and ardent seekers.
कल्याण का संपादकीय कौशल
1927 में शुरू हुए ‘कल्याण’ के संपादक के रूप में, श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी ने इस मासिक पत्रिका को आध्यात्मिक और नैतिक मार्गदर्शन का एक प्रकाशस्तंभ बना दिया। उनके संपादन में, ‘कल्याण’ सत्य, भक्ति और आलोक का पर्याय बन गया। वे यह सुनिश्चित करते थे कि प्रत्येक अंक में संतों के जीवन, आध्यात्मिक सिद्धांतों के व्यावहारिक अनुप्रयोग, और उन दार्शनिक विचारों पर पर लेख हों । उनके लेखन और भाषणों में हमेशा नैतिक मूल्यों को विकसित करने के महत्व की चर्चा होती थी। जल्द ही भाईजी को कल्याण के पाठकों के हज़ारों पत्र हर माह आने लगे। इनमें से सभी पत्रों के उत्तर पहले वे अपने कर-कमलों से ही लिखते थे, पर बाद में जब इनकी संख्या बहुत ज़्यादा हो गई, तो वे उनके उत्तर देने के लिए टाइप मशीन का सहारा लेने लगे। पत्र भेजने वालों में उनके श्रद्धालु एवं साधक भी थे।
A Beacon of Simplicity and Humanitarianism
Every saint and enlightened soul who has walked this earth has embraced simplicity, and Bhaiji was no exception. He lived a simple life, dedicating himself entirely to the service of others. Rising early, he started his day with japa and yoga, followed by prayers to Radha Krishna. His philanthropic activities extended beyond publishing—he contributed significantly to educational initiatives, healthcare, and the welfare of the underprivileged. Guided by the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), Poddar Ji firmly believed that spirituality transcends all boundaries. He was a pure Vaishnava. His approach to social reform emphasized compassion, mutual respect, and the moral upliftment of individuals through self-realization. He used to spend considerable time in his daily routine meeting the visitors. He devoted some time daily to meeting visitors, patiently listening to their concerns and offering words of comfort or practical assistance wherever possible.
सरलता और मानवता की मिसाल
हर संत और जागृत आत्मा जिन्होंने इस पृथ्वी पर कदम रखा, उन्होंने सरलता को अपनाया, और भाईजी भी इससे अछूते नहीं थे। उन्होंने एक साधारण जीवन जीने का संकल्प लिया, और पूरी तरह से दूसरों की सेवा में समर्पित रहे। वे सवेरे जल्दी उठकर जप और योग करने के बाद राधा कृष्ण की पूजा करते थे। उनके मानवतावादी कार्य केवल प्रकाशन तक सीमित नहीं थे । उन्होंने शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य सेवाओं और असहायों की भलाई के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया। ‘वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम’ (सम्पूर्ण विश्व एक परिवार है) के सिद्धांत से मार्गदर्शित होते हुए, पोद्दार जी दृढ़ विश्वास रखते थे कि आध्यात्मिकता सभी सीमाओं को पार कर जाती है। वे एक पवित्र वैष्णव थे। उनका सामाजिक सुधार के प्रति दृष्टिकोण करुणा, परस्पर सम्मान और आत्म-साक्षात्कार के माध्यम से लोगों का नैतिक उत्थान था। वे अपनी रोज़मर्रा की दिनचर्या में काफी समय आगंतुकों से मिलने में बिताते थे। वे प्रत्येक दिन कुछ समय उन्हें मिलने, उनके विचारों को धैर्यपूर्वक सुनने और जहां भी संभव हो, उन्हें सांत्वना देने या व्यावहारिक सहायता प्रदान करने के लिए समर्पित करते थे।
Once, Shri Indra Narayan Dwivedi, a regular contributor to Kalyan magazine, faced legal troubles due to his inability to pay a loan. The court declared that he would be jailed if he failed to pay the loan within the deadline. Upon learning this, Bhaiji immediately sent a person along with the due amount to settle the matter. This swift action saved Shri Dwivedi’s dignity and became a testament to Bhaiji’s principles of selflessness. He used to love the workers of Gita Press as if they were his family members. Almost everyone, including his visitors and the lesser privileged ones, used to feel his affection towards them.
एक बार, श्री इंद्र नारायण द्विवेदी, जो कल्याण पत्रिका में नियमित लेख देते थे, एक कर्ज़ न चुका पाने के कारण कानूनी मुश्किलों का सामना कर रहे थे। अदालत ने यह घोषित किया कि अगर वे निर्धारित समय सीमा के भीतर कर्ज़ नहीं चुका पाए तो उन्हें जेल भेज दिया जाएगा। जब यह बात भाईजी को पता चली, तो उन्होंने तुरंत एक व्यक्ति को कर्ज़ की राशि के साथ भेजकर मामले को सुलझवाया। इस त्वरित कार्य ने श्री द्विवेदी की प्रतिष्ठा को बचाया और भाईजी के निःस्वार्थता के सिद्धांत का प्रतीक बन गया। वे गीता प्रेस के कर्मचारियों को अपने परिवार के सदस्य की भांति स्नेह करते थे। लगभग हर कोई, चाहे वह आगंतुक हो या कम सम्पन्न लोग, उनकी ओर से उनके स्नेह को अनुभव करते थे।
The Enduring Legacy
His life exemplified how one’s commitment to a greater cause can elevate an entire society. As a staunch believer of non-violence, he was always against cruelty. For him, a cow was not merely a milk-yielding animal but a go-mata who should be worshipped. He exhibited the true spirit of ‘Sanatana Dharma’ in his daily routine and inspired countless people to lead a simple life of virtue and purpose. Even today, the works of Gita Press and the Kalyan editions serve as guides for people who are on the path of spiritual growth. Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Ji’s journey was of unwavering faith, tireless dedication, and profound wisdom. While doing his work at Geeta Press, he gradually developed an aversion to worldly possessions and got totally absorbed in the pursuit of divinity till his death on 22nd March 1971 after a prolonged illness. Even during his final journey to the heavenly realms, his face radiated the same joy as always, and his right hand, raised in a gesture of respect, reflected his immense compassion for all.
