God (Shree Radha Krishna) and his pure devotees are inseparable because His devotees identify themselves completely with Him. Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Ji Maharaj, Bhai Ji Maharaj as he is fondly known as, is the foremost saint of the highest order. He was blessed with divine visions of Shree Radha Krishna and even saints from Sat Yuga like Devarshi Narad, Angiras Muni and the four Kumaras used to visit him often and give him darshan, guidance and blessings for his noble work. Most of the people knew him as the founder of the ‘ Gita Press ‘ in Gorakhpur along with Seth Jaya Dayal Goyanka and Shree Ghanshyam Das Jalan. The ‘ Gita Press ‘ was set up on     29th of April 1923.

प्रभु (श्री राधा-कृष्ण) और उनके अनन्य भक्त अविभाज्य हैं क्योंकि उनके भक्त स्वयं को पूरी तरह से प्रभु के साथ एकाकार कर लेते हैं। श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार जी महाराज, जिन्हें स्नेहपूर्वक भाईजी महाराज के नाम से जाना जाता है, उच्च कोटि के महान संतों में अग्रणी हैं। उन्हें श्री राधा-कृष्ण के दिव्य दर्शन प्राप्त हुए और यहाँ तक कि सतयुग के संत जैसे देवरषि नारद, अंगिरस मुनि और चार कुमार भी अक्सर उनके पास आते थे और उन्हें दर्शन, मार्गदर्शन और उनके पवित्र कार्यों के लिए आशीष देते थे। अधिकतर लोग उन्हें गोरखपुर स्थित ‘गीता प्रेस’ के संस्थापक के रूप में जानते हैं, जिसे उन्होंने सेठ जय दयाल गोयनका और श्री घनश्याम दास जालान के साथ मिलकर स्थापित किया था। ‘गीता प्रेस’ की स्थापना 29 अप्रैल 1923 को हुई थी।

So it was set up 101 years ago due to the efforts of Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar Maharaj who worked relentlessly for spreading Vedic knowledge, the knowledge of our scriptures and for spreading the concepts of karma, jnana and bhakti and the multiple ways to reach God by rendering the Puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana and all our scriptures in easy to understand language for the general public. The illustrations used to convey the stories were very appealing to everyone, even to an illiterate person for following the gist of the scriptures.

तो यह 101 वर्ष पहले श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार महाराज के प्रयास के कारण स्थापित हुई, जिन्होंने वैदिक ज्ञान, हमारे शास्त्रों का ज्ञान और कर्म, ज्ञान और भक्ति के सिद्धांतों को फैलाने के लिए अथक परिश्रम किया। उन्होंने पुराणों, महाभारत, रामायण और हमारे सभी शास्त्रों को आम जनता के लिए सरल और समझने योग्य भाषा में प्रस्तुत किया। इन कहानियों को व्यक्त करने के लिए उन्होंने जिन चित्रों का उपयोग किया गया, वे इतने प्रभावशाली थे कि एक अशिक्षित व्यक्ति भी शास्त्रों के सार को आसानी से समझ सकता था।

Bhaiji as Shree Hanuman Prasad Poddar was affectionately known as was the founding editor of ‘Kalyan’ which was published by Gita Press. He was also a litterateur, philanthropist, a revolutionary leader and a spiritual leader. Low cost and affordable publications helped Indians to hold on to their spiritual and philosophical roots despite being under the British rule and banning of Ayurveda as the valid stream of medicine and the loss of our own Gurukul system of education. Bhai Ji was arrested by the British. In fact ‘Kalyan’ even fought for entry of Dalits in temples. Gita Press publications helped the people of India to retain their originality, faith and identity all throughout. British considered such acts of expression as seditious acts and they opposed Bhai Ji due to fear of a rebellion.

भाईजी, जैसा कि श्री हनुमान प्रसाद पोद्दार को सभी स्नेहपूर्वक सम्बोधित करते थे, ‘कल्याण’ के संस्थापक संपादक थे, जिसे ‘गीता प्रेस’ द्वारा प्रकाशित किया जाता था । वे एक साहित्यकार, परोपकारी, क्रांतिकारी नेता और आध्यात्मिक गुरु भी थे। ब्रिटिश शासन के अधीन होने, आयुर्वेद को वैध चिकित्सा पद्धति के रूप में प्रतिबंधित किए जाने और हमारी ‘गुरुकुल प्रणाली’ की शिक्षा को खो देने के बावजूद, ये कम लागत और सस्ती प्रकाशन सामग्री भारतीयों को उनकी आध्यात्मिक और दार्शनिक जड़ों से जुड़े रहने में मदद करती रही। भाईजी को ब्रिटिशों द्वारा गिरफ्तार भी किया गया था। दरअसलl, ‘कल्याण’ ने दलितों के मंदिरों में प्रवेश के लिए भी संघर्ष किया था। ‘गीता प्रेस’ के प्रकाशनों ने भारतीय जनता को अपनी मौलिकता, आस्था और पहचान बनाए रखने में मदद की। ब्रिटिश शासकों ने ऐसे अभिव्यक्ति के कार्यों को देशद्रोही माना और किसी विद्रोह के डर से भाईजी का विरोध किया।

It is very important to note that the Gita Press was founded at a time when Christian Missionaries were rapidly converting Hindus to Christianity. At that time, having good knowledge about Hindu Sanatan dharma was not easy for the Hindus and they might have been easy targets because the Missionaries used to distribute printed copies of the Bible. But when printed books were available from the Gita Press for the common man, it was a Godsend and pure grace of Lord Krishna that dharma was defended as the awareness spread throughout India.

यहाँ इस बात पर विचार करना बहुत आवश्यक है कि ‘गीता प्रेस’ की स्थापना उस समय हुई थी जब ईसाई मिशनरी हिंदुओं को तेजी से ईसाई धर्म में परिवर्तित कर रहे थे। उस समय हिंदुओं के लिए सनातन धर्म के बारे में अच्छी जानकारी प्राप्त करना आसान नहीं था, और वे मिशनरियों का आसान लक्ष्य बन सकते थे, क्योंकि वे बाइबिल की मुद्रित प्रतियां बांटते थे। लेकिन जब ‘गीता प्रेस’ से आम जनता के लिए मुद्रित पुस्तकें उपलब्ध हुईं, तो यह भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की कृपा और एक दैवीय वरदान था जिसने पूरे भारत में जागरूकता फैलाते हुए धर्म की रक्षा की।

Small booklets of stotram, mantras, chalisas helped the people of India to reconnect with Sanatan dharma. Bhaiji was a ‘Ras Siddha Sant’, a visionary and a spiritually empowered soul was chosen by the divinity for instilling pride and devotion about their culture, roots, value system and their most ancient civilization.

स्तोत्रों, मंत्रों और चालीसा की छोटी पुस्तिकाएं लोगों को सनातन धर्म से फिर से जोड़ने में सहायक बनीं। भाईजी एक ‘रस-सिद्ध संत’ थे, एक दूरदर्शी और आध्यात्मिक रूप से सशक्त आत्मा, जिन्हें दिव्यता ने चुना था ताकि वे भारतीय संस्कृति, उनकी जड़ों, मूल्य प्रणाली और सबसे प्राचीन सभ्यता के प्रति गौरव और भक्ति को पुनः स्थापित कर सकें।

Bhai Ji travelled extensively across North India, Mumbai and other parts of India and realised the pathetic and pitiful state of Indians during the British Raj. His profound spiritual knowledge, translations of the Puranas, Upanishads, shastras and scriptures and his entrepreneurial and revolutionary spirit advocating Sanatan dharma and Gau Raksha continues to inspire generations of Indians and Hindus.

भाईजी ने उत्तर भारत, मुंबई और भारत के अन्य भागों की व्यापक यात्राएं कीं और ब्रिटिश शासन के दौरान भारतीयों की दयनीय स्थिति को महसूस किया। उनका गहन आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान, पुराणों, उपनिषदों, शास्त्रों और अन्य धर्मग्रंथों के अनुवाद, और सनातन धर्म और गौ रक्षा के पक्ष में उनकी उद्यमशील और क्रांतिकारी भावना, पीढ़ियों तक भारतीयों और हिंदुओं को प्रेरित करती रही।

Affordable publications and widespread distribution and accessibility of spiritual literature, catalogues and a strong distribution network helped immensely to inculcate deep faith in Sanatan dharma for millions of Hindus across the globe. Bhai Ji was directly blessed and empowered by the divinity for bringing a spiritual awareness and inspiration for nurturing spiritual values in society and preserving our rich heritage.

Shri Poddar was not just one of the founding editors of Gita Press. He was a torchbearer of Indian culture and spirituality. He brought religion out of the confines of books and into the hearts of the masses. His words carried such sweetness and his thoughts such depth that everyone who listened to him was drawn to his wisdom.

श्री पोद्दार जी केवल गीता प्रेस के संस्थापक संपादकों में से एक नहीं थे । वे भारतीय संस्कृति और आध्यात्म के ध्वजवाहक थे। उन्होंने धर्म को पुस्तकों की सीमा से निकालकर जनमानस के हृदय तक पहुँचाया। उनकी वाणी में ऐसा माधुर्य और विचारों में ऐसी गहराई थी कि जो भी उन्हें सुनता, वह उनके ज्ञान से अभिभूत हो जाता।

The ‘Kalyan’ magazine, published by Gita Press, was a reflection of his profound insights. Every single word seemed to ignite a lamp of love, peace, and spiritual awakening within the hearts of its readers. However, Bhaiji Maharaj was not only confined to writing and editing. His life is a shining example of simplicity, compassion, and selfless service.

गीता प्रेस से प्रकाशित ‘कल्याण’ पत्रिका उनके गहन विचारों का प्रतिबिंब थी। इसका प्रत्येक शब्द पाठकों के हृदय में प्रेम, शांति और आध्यात्मिक जागृति का दीप प्रज्वलित करता था। लेकिन भाइजी महाराज केवल लेखन और संपादन तक सीमित नहीं थे। उनका जीवन सादगी, करुणा और निस्वार्थ सेवा का आदर्श उदाहरण था।

Through his actions and teachings, he broke down barriers of caste and creed, reminding everyone that love and service are the truest forms of religion. People saw in him a saint, a guide, and an elder brother, and that is why he came to be known as Bhaiji Maharaj. Even today, his legacy teaches us that genuine devotion is reflected in service and the welfare of others.

अपने कर्मों और शिक्षाओं के माध्यम से उन्होंने जाति-धर्म की दीवारों को तोड़ा और यह सिखाया कि सच्चा धर्म प्रेम और सेवा में निहित है। लोगों ने उनमें एक संत, एक मार्गदर्शक और एक बड़े भाई का स्वरूप देखा, और इसी कारण वे ‘भाइजी महाराज’ कहलाए। आज भी उनकी विरासत हमें यह सिखाती है कि सच्ची भक्ति दूसरों की सेवा और उनके कल्याण में प्रकट होती है।
